Over the same period, registrations of the Yorkshire terrier – once the UK’s most loved dog – have fallen 88 per cent and it is now the 59th most popular breed.
The Kennel Club’s Bill Lambert said social media had made people aware of more breeds but warned: ‘Don’t just choose a pet based on trends and popular culture.’
Other European breeds becoming more popular include the Italian pointer, the Belgian shepherd dog and the Portuguese water dog.
