Celtic fans have allegedly been trying to stop Rangers fans from getting into the Ibrox stadium ahead of the Old Firm clash by gluing the entrances shut.

The reported incident, which involved glue and expanding foam, is said to have taken place in the early hours of this morning.

The second-half of the derby was delayed after stewards had to clear broken bottles and glass that were thrown onto the pitch near to Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart’s penalty area.

A number of stewards came onto the pitch and searched through Joe Hart’s box to look for broken glass

Joe Hart flagged the pieces of sharp glass to referee Willie Collum after returning to the pitch from the dressing room for the second half

Pundits and former players from both teams condemned the fans who threw the glass onto the pitch at half-time.

Ally McCoist said the fans acted with ‘gross stupidity’, while Chris Sutton tweeted: ‘Absolute scumbags throwing glass bottles on to the pitch. How low can some people go.’

Three men have been arrested and charged in connection with an incident that took place at around 2.30am with enquiries still ongoing.

A Rangers spokesperson said that expanding foam had been used on stadium entrances and added: ‘It’s been an attempt from Celtic fans to prevent Rangers fans from getting into the ground’

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: ‘Police responded around 2.45am on Sunday, 3 April, 2022 following vandalism at Ibrox Stadium, Govan.

‘Officers attended and three men aged 18, 22 and 25 have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Enquiries remain ongoing.’

The supporters of the two Glasgow-based clubs have a long standing rivalry, the two teams have played each other more than 400 times in their history (pictured Ibrox stadium)

Today will be the first time there have been two sets of fans inside the stadium for an Old Firm derby since December 2019.

Although Celtic will have only 700 supporters.

Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph tweeted: ‘Expanding foam was sprayed around the entrances to the turnstiles at the Broomloan end.’

A Rangers fan page also posted about the incident this morning, accompanied with an image of the alleged attempts on the Ibrox gates.

They said: ‘Ibrox Stadium has been vandalised through the night by a group of ‘Glasgow Derby’ fans.

‘The group have used expanding foam and glue on the gates/shutters around the ground before some of them were apprehended by security and police.

‘Total damage at this stage is unclear.’
