Injured pupils have been taken to hospital after a ceiling collapsed on the second floor of a £15,000-a-year preparatory school in London this morning.

Three fire engines and 20 firefighters raced to the scene at Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery in Dulwich, South London, after the collapse at about 9.20am.

Paramedics took multiple children to hospital while other people were treated at the school for their injuries. The total number of people injured was unclear.

All other children and staff were evacuated from the 156-year-old building, with fire crews from West Norwood and Brixton fire stations sent to the scene.

Photographs showed police cars, fire engines and ambulances outside the school, but the London Fire Brigade said there was ‘no further risk of collapse’ at the site.

The building housing Rosemead was built in 1865, but the school only moved into it in 1974 when a group of parents bought it from the Old Vic who decided to sell.

The road on which the school is located, Thurlow Park Road, has an average house value of £519,388 – while the figure for the wider SE21 postcode area is £1,013,207.
