The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine has deepened as Russian forces intensified their shelling – with Kyiv describing it as a siege attempting to batter it into submission.
A third round of ‘peace talks’ ended with claims of minor progress towards establishing safe corridors that would allow civilians to escape the fighting.
Russia’s top negotiator said he expects those corridors to start functioning today, but there has been failure during previous attempts to lead civilians to safety.
Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s forces have continued to pummel cities with rockets amid the biggest ground war in Europe since the Second World War.
In one of the most desperate cities, Mariupol, up to 200,000 people were trying to flee, and Red Cross officials waited to hear when a corridor would be established.
In the capital Kyiv, soldiers and volunteers have built hundreds of checkpoints, often using sandbags, stacked tyres, spiked cables and heavy concrete slabs.
And in Irpin – which has been cut off from electricity, water and heat for three days – witnesses saw tanks and said Russian soldiers were seizing houses and cars.
And at 5pm today, MPs will hear from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today as Boris Johnson continues his diplomatic offensive to encourage Western leaders to punish Russia for the invasion which has now been running for 13 days.
