Celtic fans have allegedly been trying to stop Rangers fans from getting into the Ibrox stadium ahead of the Old Firm clash by gluing the entrances shut.

The reported incident, which involved glue and expanding foam, is said to have taken place in the early hours of this morning.

Three men have been arrested and charged in connection with an incident that took place at around 2.30am with enquiries still ongoing.

Three men allegedly tried to use glue and expanding foam to keep entrances at the Ibrox shut (pictured), so that Rangers fans couldn’t get in to watch the Old Firm derby

The supporters of the two Glasgow-based clubs have a long standing rivalry, the two teems have played each other more than 400 times in their history (pictured Ibrox stadium)

The incident takes place before what may prove to be a vital match in the race for the Premiership title.

As Celtic have a three point lead over Rangers going in to the game, and sit at the top of the table with a better goal difference.

A Rangers spokesperson said that expanding foam had been used on stadium entrances and added: ‘It’s been an attempt from Celtic fans to prevent Rangers fans from getting into the ground’

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: ‘Police responded around 2.45am on Sunday, 3 April, 2022 following vandalism at Ibrox Stadium, Govan.

‘Officers attended and three men aged 18, 22 and 25 have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Enquiries remain ongoing.’

There is often a strong police presence at the game, as the two sets of fans are each others’ biggest rivals (pictured: Celtic fans arriving at the Ibrox Stadium)

Today will be the first time there have been two sets of fans inside the stadium for an Old Firm derby since December 2019.

Although Celtic will have only 700 supporters.

Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph tweeted: ‘Expanding foam was sprayed around the entrances to the turnstiles at the Broomloan end.’

A Rangers fan page also posted about the incident this morning, accompanied with an image of the alleged attempts on the Ibrox gates.

They said: ‘Ibrox Stadium has been vandalised through the night by a group of ‘Glasgow Derby’ fans.

‘The group have used expanding foam and glue on the gates/shutters around the ground before some of them were apprehended by security and police.

‘Total damage at this stage is unclear.’
