A grammar school-educated gangster who called himself ‘Mr Bright’ was jailed for eight years –  after police found loaded guns and a haul of drugs at his flat.

Mike Kabeya 24, had previously been freed in 2019 for drugs and weapons offences after his then lawyer described him as ‘one of the brightest’ clients he had ever met.

The silk had trilled to the court about his use of the word ‘discombobulating’ – meaning causing confusion – during legal conferences.

But last March, Kabeya who was a former pupil of the prestigious William Hulme Grammar School in Manchester was arrested again.

Police raided a luxury apartment which he rented under the false name ‘Harrison Bright’ in Manchester city centre and found two semi-automatic pistols, bullets, cocaine worth £2,700, £3,160 in banknotes and a cash counting machine.

Officers also seized various Gucci and Louis Vuitton designer trainers and clothing around the £420,000 property and discovered Kabeya had been trading in crypto currency. He even had drug dealing business cards with the caption ‘Delivery anywhere 24/7.’

At Manchester Crown Court Kabeya who is listed as director and CEO of a social media business known as ‘Block Empire’ admitted possessing unlawful firearms, having cocaine with intent to supply and possessing criminal property.

The court heard the highly intelligent hoodlum formerly of the city’s Collyhurst district had first appeared in court in 2015 aged 17 when he used a cash counting machine in a gangland laundering racket in which he recruited fellow pupils from his high school as ‘money mules.’

Mike Kabeya 24, had previously been freed for drugs and weapons offences back in 2019

Kabeya was freed after using the word ‘discombobulating’ during a conference with his lawyer

He was given a suspended sentence but in 2019 he appeared before the same court after police acting on a tip off about suspicious activity in the street found him in a car in possession of cannabis and a lock knife.

He was freed again with a community order after a judge urged him to ‘put his abilities and talent to good use.’

At the time Kabeya’s then lawyer said: ‘He’s a very bright young man, one of the brightest I’ve had in front of me if I’m honest. He’s the first client I’ve had to use the word ‘discombobulating’ during our interview. He has a great deal of potential. He’s very bright, he is an entrepreneur. He has a social media news company. He’s a very engaging young man.’

But on Thursday it emerged Kabeya had been detained on March 26 in a major police operation centred on his flat which he rented under a false name using a forged driving licence.

Miss Juliet Berry prosecuting said: ‘Officers seized two firearms and ammunition plus cocaine and associated paraphernalia such as snapbags scales and business cards stating: ‘Delivery anywhere 24/7’.

‘Cash was found plus cryptocurrency and associated crypto devices. A quantity of mobile phones was also recovered plus a cash counting machine. Cocaine was found on a desk and packaged into deals and a lock knife was also found.

Mike Kabeya is a mobster who called himself ‘Mr Bright’ after he impressed a court in 2019

‘Officers observed there were a large quantity of high value training shoes and designer clothing and accessories such as Gucci and Luis Vuitton within the apartment, he had rented the flat using a false name using a driving license in the name of Harrison Bright.

Kabeya answered no comment in police interview. He had a total of 25 offences on his record.

In mitigation defence counsel Miss Katherine Pierpoint said: ‘He is a bright man but has got himself involved in serious criminality and has been extremely stupid. He wants to get on with his sentence make the best use of it and get on with his life.

‘His friends and family are shocked by his behaviour. He is described as a family man who is close to his mother and is concerned about the effect this has had on her.’

Sentencing Judge Alan Conrad QC said of Kabeya: ‘He has got business acumen – if only he could apply it in the right direction.’

Alumni of William Hulme include ex-Blackburn Rovers footballer Ashley Ward, former MPs Ivan Lewis and Andrew Bennett, the late Carry On actor Pete Butterworth and Sir Robert Mark the former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
