Olympic swimmer Scott Miller has been arrested at his Sydney home with police to allege he was ‘calling the shots’ for a large scale ice syndicate involving drugs hidden in candles.

One-time sporting golden boy Miller, 45, was one of two men arrested by NSW Police about 6am on Tuesday morning, with police storming the retired athlete’s waterfront Rozelle unit in the city’s inner west.

Detectives are expecting to charge the Atlanta Games silver and bronze medallist with directing a criminal syndicate later today. Miller was ‘surprised’ when police busted down the door and arrested him about 6am.

A business associate, 47, was also arrested in nearby Balmain and is expected to be charged. Both were spirited to Newtown Police Station this morning while police executed a search warrant on the premises of a Bankstown business.

Police will allege Miller’s drug syndicate was planning to ship ice to meth-riddled regional New South Wales towns, with Albury on the Victorian border allegedly a particular focus.

The investigation began after police discovered the candles, which allegedly carried half a kilogram of high-quality methamphetamine, just weeks ago.

‘For all intents and purposes the candles looked like normal candles, but they were laced with death and misery,’ Drugs and Firearms Squad Commander John Watson said.

Undercover officers meticulously searched Miller’s unit on Tuesday morning, lifting his mattress, inspecting a Panadol packet and carting out evidence in regulation cardboard containers.

Miller’s pug wandered around the unit excitedly during the raid, which continued late into the morning. The front door was busted open.

A source with knowledge of Miller’s arrest said he had said nothing to the police about the allegations and has been running a shipping company of late.

Miller won silver and bronze medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the butterfly and the 4 x 100m medley relay respectively.

He was briefly married to socialite Charlotte Dawson in 1999 and 2000. She died by suicide in 2014.

Miller has had a troubled recent history. In an interview with 60 Minutes the same year as Ms Dawson’s death, the athlete admitted he was battling a drug addiction.

Five years ago he worked as a drug awareness and prevention speaker with the Church of Scientology’s Narconon program, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The role involved him ‘showing people addicted to drugs or alcohol that there is another way to live life’ and conducting drug interventions.

It is unclear whether he is still involved in the program. Local Scientology officials were approached for comment.

More recently, he was a business development manager for a company called reinteractive.

Both men were taken to Newtown Police Station in the city’s inner west. Charges are yet to be laid.
