Virgin Media broadband is DOWN for thousands of users across the UK

  • Reports of problems with Virgin’s broadband sprung up around 10:30am BST
  • Number of complaints rocketed to more than 1,700 in just 15 minutes
  • 80% of people experiencing difficulties say the problem is with cable internet
  • London, Birmingham, Brighton and Bristol seem to be the worst-hit cities

Virgin Media broadband appears to be suffering an outage in several locations across the UK.

Thousands of user complaints picked up by the independent site DownDetector indicate London is the worst-affected location.

Most people who are experiencing difficulties (80 per cent) say the problem is with their cable internet, not Virgin’s mobile services.

The outage coincides with thousands of other people complaining that sites like Zoom and Twitter have crashed.

While it is not clear if these websites and services are experiencing their own technical issues, it appears the reports are linked to the problems at Virgin.

Bristol, Birmingham and Brighton also appear to badly affected by the outage.

MailOnline has approached Virgin Media for comment.

Virgin Media is one of the most popular broadband providers in the UK and, unlike other internet service providers, has its own infrastructure and does not use the Openreach network.

As a result, customers on BT, TalkTalk, Sky or other networks are unaffected.

Virgin suffered another drop in its broadband coverage last month, when it crashed for Britons between 8am and 9am on March 10.

Virgin rarely divulges the causes of its connection issues and the root of the latest problem remains unknown.

The outage comes as more Britons are returning to the office and ditching working from home after the easing of lockdown restrictions on April 12.

With some children on half term and schools now also back in full flow, this drop in coverage is unlikely to be as disruptive as outages that occurred in the depths of the nationwide lockdowns across 2020 and 2021.

However, many people are still working remotely and shielding from the coronavirus.
