Al Sharpton shares video of himself boarding private jet to Minneapolis for George Floyd trial

Al Sharpton has been blasted as ‘tone deaf’ after he shared a video of himself boarding a private jet to travel to Minnesota for Derek Chauvin‘s murder trial. 

The 66-year-old civil rights activist uploaded the clip to Twitter Monday as the trial wrapped up in Minneapolis. 

Chauvin, a white police officer, has been charged with second-degree murder over the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in the city last Memorial Day. 

‘Headed to Minneapolis to stand with the Floyd family as closing arguments are set to be made today,’ Shaprton wrote above the video, which has been viewed almost one million times. 

Sharpton has made several trips to Minneapolis since Floyd’s death last May, and has become close with his family.  

However, the controversial activist was immediately slammed for Monday’s Twitter clip, which appeared to be more about his high-flying style than any legal proceedings. 

Hundreds of people panned  Sharpton in the replies section, with one writing: ‘Any ‘leader’ of the people flying a private plane shouldn’t be trusted.’

Sharpton was seen with members of Floyd’s family in Minneapolis Monday after jetting in for the conclusion of the trial

Another chimed in: ‘The optics of this guy walking to a private jet is hilarious. It’s just like Kylie Jenner and the Pepsi commercial intended to end racism. At least try to make it seem about the message and don’t distract with the show.’

Meanwhile, writer Jonah Goldberg blasted: ‘Private jets for social justice. My God, America is rich’.

However, there were some who supported Sharpton, saying his mode of transportation was irrelevant. 

‘I see you Rev! Do your thing. Also absolutely hilarious that some are getting more in an uproar over this dude walking to a private jet than Floyd being killed,’ one fan wrote.  

It’s believed that Sharpton – who has a reported net worth of $2 million – loaned the private jet. 

The New York Post reports that Sharpton said last week that media mogul Tyler Perry had offered him the private jet for the flight.

Sharpton has previously shared videos of himself using a private plane to fly to Minneapolis, and once thanked Perry for a loan of his aircraft. 

On June 3 last year, he uploaded another video of himself boarding a private jet and wrote: ‘Thank you to @TylerPerry for providing a private plane during this pandemic for Gwen Carr (the mother of Eric Garner) and I to get to Minneapolis to meet the family of #GeorgeFloyd’.

On June 8, Sharpton posted yet another clip and wrote: ‘Heading to TX for the final memorial service for #GeorgeFloyd. Gwen Carr, Alisha Garner, my communications director Rachel, & my social media manager Ashley join me. Thanks again to Tyler Perry for providing private plane services for us & the family to travel for services.’

Meanwhile, last October,  Sharpton shared a snap taken inside another private jet as he flew to Chicago. 

‘A good friend who will remain anonymous is flying me to Chicago for a book signing of my new book, Rise Up. I’ll be at South Shore Cultural Center at 11:30 am/ct. I’m going to Waukegan, Illinois this evening at 5 about a police killing of an unarmed man,’ he wrote.  

Back in 2014, The New York Times reported that Sharpton faced almost $4.5 million in federal and state tax liens. 

The Post claims that, as of 2019, he still  owed nearly $700,000 in back taxes for three of his companies.
