Australia’s cricket captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the second Ashes test after being named as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case.

The 28-year-old was dining with another cricketer in Adelaide on Wednesday night when a customer at the next table was confirmed as a positive Covid case.

Cummins left the restaurant immediately, but still won’t be allowed to play in the second Ashes test.

Steve Smith will step up as captain for the first time since the infamous sandpaper ball-tampering scandal from 2018.

The news comes after it was confirmed Josh Hazlewood would be out following a side injury, and if Cummins is out, it will be an additional blow for the Aussie side.

Under South Australian Covid-19 rules, close contacts are required to isolate for a designated time given by health authorities, usually seven days.

Queensland cricketer Michael Neser is set to replace Cummins should he be forced to isolate for the match.

Cricket reporter Peter Lalor told SEN it was incredibly lucky fellow teammates Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon weren’t ruled out as they were also at the same restaurant but were eating outside.
