An armed intruder has been arrested in the grounds of Windsor Castle today, where the Queen is celebrating Christmas.

A 19-year-old man from from Southampton was allegedly carrying an offensive weapon and is now being held in police custody after triggering an alarm at around 8.30am this morning.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said the teenager did not manage to enter any buildings during the intrusion. They added that the Royal Family are aware of the intrusion.

The Queen is currently celebrating Christmas at Windsor, along with her son Charles and his wife Camilla. They have also been joined by Edward and his wife Sophie and their children, Louise and James.

Her Majesty missed a service this morning as she remained indoors while other senior royals arrived at St George’s Chapel.

Superintendent Rebecca Mears said in a statement: ‘An investigation is ongoing following this incident and we are working with colleagues from the Metropolitan Police.

‘The man has been arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody at this time.

‘We can confirm security processes were triggered within moments of the man entering the grounds and he did not enter any buildings.

‘Members of the Royal Family have been informed about the incident.

‘We do not believe there is a wider danger to the public.’

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall , the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester met the Dean of Windsor outside the chapel ahead of the Christmas Matins service.

Sophie and Edward were accompanied by their daughter Lady Louise and son James, Viscount Severn.

It is understood the Queen’s absence from the service is a personal choice and follows a precautionary approach seen over the last six months.

The service, which is ticketed, is attended by residents of the Windsor estate and members of the chapel congregation.

The monarch is expected to be joined at Windsor Castle by Charles and Camilla, having shelved her customary trip to Sandringham as a ‘precautionary’ measure amid surging Covid cases – with more than 122,000 cases recorded yesterday.

William and Kate will not be joining the Queen this year, instead spending the festive season in Norfolk, where they will host the Middletons.

‘Comedy terrorist’ who gatecrashed Prince William’s 21st birthday party

This is not the suspected security breach to have taken place in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In June 2003, self-styled ‘comedy terrorist’ Aaron Barschak came to national fame by gatecrashing Prince William’s 21st birthday party at Windsor.

During the affair, Barschak wore a pink dress, a false beard and a turban in a fashion similar to Osama bin Laden.

After flashing his merkin at the crowds outside, he scaled the walls of the castle and entered the young prince’s party.

Sources told The Guardian at the time that CPS lawyers decided there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to charge Barschak for one or more of four offences – burglary, threatening behaviour, criminal trespass and assault.

After learning he would face no action, the ‘comedy terrorist’ claimed his stunt had brought him celebrity status.

In an interview with LBC News, he said: ‘I don’t speak to any of my friends anymore. I’m far too famous for them. I get people in the street coming up to me and it’s a terrible strain.’

Barschak claimed that he was challenged and escorted to a police point after breaking into the grounds, but was allowed into the party area after giving what the Met Police described as a ‘credible story’.

At least nine police officers were under disciplinary investigation over the incident.

Chief Inspector Mark Goddard, a senior officer who was in charge of security at Windsor, was moved from his position.
