Three students were shot, with one killed and two critically wounded, when someone opened fire outside a Des Moines, Iowa, high school on Monday afternoon.
The Des Moines Police Department tweeted at 3pm local time that officers were at the scene of the shooting at East High School.
According to police, one of the victims, a 15-year-old boy, died while being treated at an area hospital while the two other teens remain in critical condition.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said multiple suspects in the shooting have been detained, but he declined to reveal any additional details.
‘It’s a punch in the gut that we’ve got three kids in the hospital, but we’re hoping for the best for them,’ Parizek told KCCI 8.
Police added that the shots appeared to have come from a passing car.
Des Moines Public Schools said the high school was on lockdown and residents are were asked to stay away from the area before students were cleared to leave at 4:30pm.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives of Kansas City is on the scene providing assistance to the ongoing investigation.
East High School student Kaylie Shannon told KCCI 8 that she was outside in the school parking lot when she heard the gunfire.
‘I was just sitting in my friend’s car and then all of the sudden I heard 11 gunshots and some boys screaming,’ she said.
