Liz Truss slammed Russia’s ‘reckless and appalling’ attack on a maternity hospital in Ukraine today as she warned failure to stop Vladimir Putin would have ‘terrible implications for European and global security’.
She spoke during a visit to Washington after a maternity hospital in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol was destroyed in an appalling ‘direct hit’ by Russian rockets that left children buried in the rubble.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky branded it an ‘atrocity’ and demanded Western powers ‘close the sky right now’ with a no-fly zone.
But she reiterated Nato‘s resistance to such a move, over fears it would trigger a wider conflict.
Speaking at a press conference alongside US counterpart Anthony Blinken she said: ‘The best way to help protect the skies is the anti-aircraft weaponry that the UK is now going to be sending to Ukraine. The attack on the hospital was absolutely abhorrent, reckless and appalling.’
