Police are continuing to quiz a murder suspect after a university academic was allegedly stabbed to death in her Essex home.
The victim has been named locally as Italian-born mother-of-one Dr Antonella Castelvedere, 52, who lectured in English and Critical Writing at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich.
Police were called to ‘concerns for the welfare of a woman’ shortly after 11.45am last Wednesday at Dr Castelvedere’s end-terraced £260,000 Victorian home in Wickham Road, Colchester. Officers found her seriously injured at her and she died at the scene.
Essex Police said an injured man also discovered at the house was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to hospital.
The force has refused to confirm the name of the victim or how she died, but reports in Italian media have identified her as Dr Castelvedere and say she was stabbed to death.
Dr Castelvedere was from the town of Bagnolo Mella in the province of Brescia Lombardy in northern Italy.
She had lived in the UK for around 25 years and shared her two-bedroom home in Colchester with her daughter and husband Dr Erstan Ersoy, 48, an economics lecturer at the University of Suffolk.
Biographical websites describe him as a Visiting Fellow to the university’s Suffolk Business School. Dr Ersoy has a degree in Political Science and Public Administration from the Political Science Faculty of Ankara University in Turkey, according to his online profiles. He also has an MA and a PhD degree in Economics from Marmara University in Turkey.
Neighbours who held a Platinum Jubilee street party in their road over the weekend have placed flowers in her memory outside her house.
Residents in the road decided to go ahead with the party to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign after taking the advice of police. They described her as ‘quiet’ and ‘well liked’.

Dr Castelvedere’s father Spartaco, a former director of an agricultural consortium, her mother Mina and brother Ferruccio still live in Bagnolo Mella. They have made no comment about her death so far.
The University of Suffolk said in a statement: ‘The University of Suffolk community is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dr Antonella Castelvedere.
‘Antonella was a widely respected and well-liked member of staff at the university where she was an outstanding academic in English and Critical Writing. Our thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.’
The university’s website described her as ‘Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Course Leader of the MA Creative and Critical Writing’.
It added: ‘With an international outlook, she has a long experience in enhancing student experience through academic leadership, innovative curriculum design and professional partnerships.’
Former students took to social media to mourn her death.
Lauren Jean Barton said on Facebook: ‘What a tragic loss… Antonella had a smile and laugh that was truly infectious. She supported and mentored me through my dissertation and was the most inspiring teacher.
‘I always looked forward to her lectures and feel honoured to have been taught by her and known her warmth and kindness. Very sad news.’
The woman was found dead at a property on Wickham Road in Colchester, Essex on June 1
Detective Chief Inspector Antony Alcock, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: ‘A dedicated team of detectives are continuing to piece together the circumstances which led up to this incident in Colchester.
‘As part of that, officers are continuing to gather accounts from people who have come forward to speak to us.
‘I would like to thank them for doing so and would again appeal to anyone who may have information on this incident to get in contact, no matter how insignificant you believe your information is.
