Brazilian football legend Pele has a urinary infection and will be kept in hospital for longer than his doctors planned.
Pele, 81, who has been undergoing chemotherapy for a colon tumour that was removed in September, returned to the Albert Einstein hospital on February 13.
However, ‘during his stay routine exams were carried out that showed the presence of a urinary infection, a fact that extends his stay as a patient in the hospital,’ a bulletin from the Sao Paulo clinic said.
‘His clinical conditions are stable and he should be released in the coming days.’
Pele underwent an endoscopy last week which left him weak and has difficulty eating and speaking, according to a report by ESPN.
Pele has had chemotherapy to treat the tumour that was found during routine exams at the end of August. He was briefly put in intensive care shortly after the surgery on his colon, and has since recovered.
He was discharged on September 30, almost one month after being hospitalised, but has spent more days in hospital since.

Three-time World Cup winner Pele is widely regarded as one of the best players in history
Pele had been recovering at his home in Guaruja, outside Sao Paulo and posts on social media updates on his health.
His latest post on his situation was on February 13 and read: ‘Friends, as I have been doing monthly, I am going to the hospital to continue my treatment.
‘I’ve already ordered a big TV and popcorn so I can watch the Super Bowl later. I will watch the match even though my friend @tombrady is not playing.
‘Thanks for all the loving messages.’
Pele said on Twitter in November that he was ‘fine’ and ‘feeling better every day’.
In an Instagram post, the mercurial forward said that he was ‘having small chemotherapy sessions’, and added that he had just finished his last session of 2021.
‘I wanted to share this achievement with you. After all, every little victory is a reason to celebrate, don’t you think?’ he wrote, with a picture of him clenching his fist.

‘Don’t worry, I’m just getting ready for the holiday season!’
When he was taken to hospital in December, he was described as being in a stable condition and would be discharged in the next ‘few days’.
It was also revealed that Pele would be ‘continuing’ his treatment.
After his admittance, Kely Nascimento, the eldest daughter of Pele, provided an update of her own – posting a picture of him smiling.
She wrote: ‘My sister Flavia Kurtz is giving him a hug for me! In two or three days he returns home to enjoy Christmas.
‘This was not a surprise. It was already scheduled and is part of the treatment. All my gratitude, always.’
Widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, the 81-year-old former Santos, New York Cosmos and Brazil player has suffered from a series of health issues in recent years, including hip surgery that left him with recurring pain and trouble walking unaided.
He underwent prostate surgery in 2015 after being taken to hospital for the second time in six months, and was admitted for a urinary infection in 2019.
Pele won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 in 92 matches.
